Faux/Foxing/Tigers Jaw @ The Joiners

Band Numero One – Faux. Faux are an Indie/Emo/Alt-rock band from Southampton consisting of Lee Male, Luke Gould, Daniel Fisher & James Cross. What a phenomenal band to open the night and tour for Foxing and Tigers Jaw. Yes, this was the very first date of the Tigers Jaw/Foxing UK & Europe Tour, and what a way to get things started. Even for sold out gigs its often rare to to see the first supporting act of a night draw a crowd like Faux did. They were loud, animated and oh so good. A perfect local compliment to the other bands that got everyone in the mood for the night to come.

Next up Foxing. Foxing is an American band from St. Louis – Missouri and they’re a sort of experimental/indie/math/post rock kinda band and consist of Jon, Conor, Eric, Ricky & Josh. Before the show I got to do a mini interview with the guys with a little bit about who they are, the tour and their approaching new release. You can hear it here:

Foxing played such an energetic set it was unbelievable. The guitarist was just mental – scroll down to see some photos of him thrashing about all over the stage. Conor singing, playing trumpet and sampler thingy was equally as energetic and full of passion. Jon drumming away in the background looking mean with a beard. And the other guys on guitar and bass keeping the whole thing grounded on the right of the stage. I didn’t really get to see much of the guys on the right because by now the venue was pretty much at full capacity. So much energy and soul was put into this performance, angry and emotional songs about, well, emo[tional] things, anguished stage presence with flailing arms and crouching ‘pained’ poses – all to top it off with a few trumpet sections. You know what? I think i enjoyed these guys way more than the headliners.

On to Tigers Jaw. Tigers Jaw is an American rock band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. They’re a kind of cult indie/pop-punk/emo thing making a few waves and scared their fans in 2013 when everyone misinterpreted a hiatus as a break-up. The main members are Brianna on keyboards and vocals, and Ben on guitar and vocals. And i must say, they look pretty cool. Following the same lines as Foxing did in their performance, minus the quirky movements and additions they had, Tigers Jaw finished the night off with a cracking set.

Melancholy, anguished and passionate alt-rock is how i’d describe their set. The whole venue was at spilling point by now – all full of adoring fans who loved every moment, knew every word and just generally went for it. I wrote one note on my phone for this gig and that was ‘hipster alert’. And for a very good reason. Not to knock anyone by the way. I lost count of the amount of disposable cameras, alternate haircuts, jumpers and wooly hats – I even witnessed an instax camera being used… you know, like an old polaroid camera. Thats a dedication. But anyway, i digress. Overall this was a fantastic night of indie/pop-punk/emo type music and people in a jam packed Joiners.
